Scholarship Erasmus+ Studying abroad
Antwerp Maritime Academy is a participating member of the Erasmus+ programme. The Erasmus+ programme aims to support actions in the fields of education and training for the period 2021-2027. The programme gives opportunities to students and staff to spend a period abroad to increase their skills and employability.
The programme
Antwerp Maritime Academy has agreements with various maritime institutions in Europe. Students of AMA may apply to spend time at these institutions. This list can always be expanded if the desired organisation is not listed. However, the preparation of a new agreement takes some time, so inform the Coordinator Internationalisation in good time. To meet the requirements of Erasmus+ you must compose a programme of the courses that you wish to follow at the selected maritime institution. You sit exams at the receiving institution and the scores you obtain abroad are carried over and included in your marks at AMA. Unfortunately, STCW-related courses cannot be replaced by courses followed elsewhere. Therefore, you can replace only the optional courses from the Master programme and/or do your dissertation abroad. You can take any course that you want as long as you have not followed it before (or if the overlap with courses already followed is limited).
Existing partnerships
We have established numerous partnerships within the Erasmus programme, offering you a wide range of maritime institutions across Europe where you can study. You can find the complete list of these partnerships below.
If there is a specific maritime institution in Europe you would like to attend that is not currently on our list, do not worry! We are open to creating new partnerships to help you achieve your academic goals. Let us know your preference, and we will explore the possibilities together.

Application and selection procedure
- Show your interest by sending an email to the Coordinator Internationalisation . The grants are awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
- Make an appointment with the Coordinator Internationalisation to discuss your options.
- The most critical point in the Erasmus application is drawing up the program. Check the website of the maritime institution you have selected and study their programme. Some institutions have special programmes for Erasmus students. Do not forget to check in which language the courses are taught. We can support you in online language learning courses should you wish.
- Once you have selected your program, you need to prepare the learning agreement. The corresponding heads of faculties must give their agreement to your program. Once this has been done, the agreement must be signed by yourself, by Antwerp Maritime Academy and by the institution that will receive you.
- The receiving institution often asks for your Transcript of Records (the scores of previous exams) and a European Health Card. Sometimes a special portal is used to submit and receive documents. Make sure you collect all the appropriate documents for submission. The receiving institution must agree with the programme.
- Once both sending and receiving institutions agree with your program, you have to sign the grant agreement before your depart. Once you provide the certificate of arrival, the first 70% of your funding will be paid.
- After you have completed and submitted all formal documents (e.g., certificate of attendance, questionnaire by Erasmus, etc.) and your testimonial, the final 30% of your funding will be paid.
