Scholarship ‘Generieke Beurzen’

Antwerp Maritime Academy is entitled to have about 2 scholarships of the type ‘Generieke Beurzen’ to go outside the EU. To obtain these scholarships, AMA needs to apply for them. This means that we need to know in advance the candidates wishing to use these scholarships.

The programme

The Flemish government awards grants for student mobility to countries outside Europe that are not included as program countries in the Erasmus+ programme. The aim of this scholarship program is to stimulate mobility for study, internship or thesis research in countries outside Europe, complementary to the possibilities of the classic Erasmus+ programme. More information about the programme can be found at https://www.studentsonthemove.be/en/scholarships/generieke-beurzen

For several years, we have a good cooperation with the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV), Santa Clara, Cuba (www.uclv.edu.cu). Due to our limited number of scholarships, we decided to dedicate our resources in that cooperation. A research internship of at least 1 month as part of your dissertation is the easiest way to organize your stay. Bear in mind that you do your research in an international context and that we ask you to write your dissertation in English. The research group Automatics and Electrical Engineering is specialized in the topics given below but other related topics can be discussed as well. Through this department, it is possible to find other co-promotors at the UCLV in other domains.

  • Building low-cost monitoring systems to evaluate air quality (in for example the harbour of Cienfuegos)
  • Building low-cost buoys that monitors several water-related parameters
  • Developing an autonomous boat (for example to map pollutants in the surface water)
  • Other topics such as data processing, user-friendly data visualization, internet of things, big data are also welcome. The list is not limitative.

Application and selection procedure

  • Step 1: A call will be launched and spread by Blackboard.
  • Step 2: Show your interest by sending an email to the coordinator of Internationalisation (see contacts at the bottom of the page). The grants are awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so be fast in your response.
  • Step 3: Prepare a title and abstract of your research in English (half a page). Also find a promotor at the Antwerp Maritime Academy. The coordinator of Internationalisation will give you feedback on the abstract. Your application can be withdrawn if your abstract does not fulfil a minimal quality.
  • Step 4: Only when the abstract is considered as ready, a request to the receiving institute will be sent. The coordinator of Internationalisation will perform this step.
  • Step 5: If the receiving institute has accepted your application, then the final administration will be done in collaboration with the coordinator of Internationalisation.
  • Step 6: After you have signed the grant agreement, the first 70% of your scholarship will be paid after your confirmation that you have arrived.
  • Step 7: When you have completed and submitted all formal documents your testimonial about your stay after returning home, the final 30% of your scholarship will be paid.
