Scholarship ‘Generieke Beurzen’
The Antwerp Maritime Academy receives approximately two general grants ("generieke beurzen") per academic year to support students who wish to study outside the EU. These grants are not automatically awarded. AMA must apply for them on behalf of eligible candidates. Therefore, it is essential for students interested in these opportunities to express their intent well in advance to ensure timely application and consideration.
The programme
The Flemish government awards grants for student mobility to countries outside Europe that are not included as program countries in the Erasmus+ programme. The aim of this scholarship program is to stimulate mobility for study, internship or thesis research in countries outside Europe, complementary to the possibilities of the classic Erasmus+ programme. More information about the programme can be found at https://www.studentsonthemove.be/en/scholarships/generieke-beurzen
Existing partnerships
For many years, the Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) has maintained a strong partnership with Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas (UCLV) in Santa Clara, Cuba (www.uclv.edu.cu). Given the limited number of grants available, AMA has chosen to prioritize resources for this esteemed partner.
A research internship of at least one month, conducted as part of a student dissertation, is the most straightforward way to arrange a stay in Cuba. As this research is undertaken in an international context, the resulting dissertation must be written in English to ensure accessibility and effective collaboration.
UCLV Automatics and Electrical Engineering research group specializes in several topics (listed below), though related topics are also welcomed. Additionally, this department can help connect students with other co-promotors at UCLV for research in different domains. This flexibility ensures a broad range of opportunities for academic and personal growth.
- Building low-cost monitoring systems to evaluate air quality (in for example the Port of Cienfuegos);
- Building low-cost buoys that monitor water-related parameters;
- Developing an autonomous boat (for example to map pollutants in the surface water);
- Other topics such as data processing, user-friendly data visualization, internet of things, big data are also welcome. The list is not limited.
