Maritime Law - Advanced

Deepen your expertise in private maritime law and contracts: how to assess risks, evaluate disputes, make well-founded decisions in international maritime contexts.
This micro-credential provides advanced knowledge of private maritime law and maritime contracts. The course helps participants understand legal risks in shipping and transport, properly assess disputes, and make informed decisions in an international maritime environment. The programme combines several core elements that refresh fundamental knowledge with a wide range of annually changing topics presented by guest speakers.

Target audience

This micro-credential is intended for professionals and interested participants who wish to deepen their knowledge of private maritime law and maritime contracts. The course covers the carriage of goods by sea, charterparty agreements, maritime trade, risk management, multimodal transport, and dispute resolution.

The programme is suitable for seafarers, shipping company managers, maritime lawyers, consultants, policymakers, and anyone aiming to make legally sound decisions within the maritime sector.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you are expected to be able to:

  • understand and apply the international and Belgian rules governing private maritime law, in particular the Belgian Shipping Code;
  • understand and apply specific maritime law regimes, such as the carriage of goods (including limitation and exemption of liability, short limitation periods, etc.), passenger transport, and the legal status of ships;
  • understand and apply the legal rules relating to related transport activities, such as multimodal transport, shore-based activities (freight forwarders, terminal operators), related operations (international sales, documentary credits, insurance), and dispute resolution;
  • apply general legal principles to complex cases by identifying, assessing, and resolving legal issues, including researching and analysing legal sources and conducting independent legal research.

Programme Structure

The advanced course Maritime Law – Advanced builds upon the core competences acquired in the compulsory course Maritime Law – Basics. Several topics that were only briefly addressed in the basic course are explored in greater depth, including (but not limited to) the carriage of goods by sea (under bills of lading, sea waybills, and multimodal transport), maritime trade (sales contracts and trade finance), and charterparty agreements.

Attention is also given to shore-based activities (cargo handling and transport intermediaries), risk management, dispute resolution (monitoring legal disputes, including specific procedures such as ship arrest), and several principles of competition law.
