About our courses
The Antwerp Maritime Academy offers 2 educations: Nautical Sciences and Marine Engineering. Both educations consist of a bachelor of 3 years followed by 1 master year. The academic year is organized in 4 modules following the structure of the Table below.
Semester 1 (September – January) |
Semester 2 (February – June) |
||
Module 1.1 |
Module 1.2 |
Module 2.1 |
Module 2.2 |
In the selection of the courses, some boundary conditions must be considered:
- Overlap in the schedule: You can combine several courses taught in English from different years. However, overlap in the time table might occur. If this should occur, we can change the learning agreement;
- Foreknowledge: For some courses foreknowledge is mandatory (i.e., mentioned in the study guide as required preliminary credits). Courses with required foreknowledge can be followed if the student has acquired that knowledge at the sending institute. We ask you to send us your Transcript of records to show us your foreknowledge. Be aware that some courses require quite some mathematical background;
- Language level: Please keep in mind that Dutch and French are the two working languages at the Antwerp Maritime Academy. Speaking/writing/understanding Dutch or French at a level B2 is absolutely necessary for incoming exchange students wishing to follow courses in Dutch or French. However, we also offer a package of courses taught in English. Bear in mind that some of the courses taught in English require group work and presentations in English and that exams can be oral and/or written;
- Courses taught in English: In the bachelor years of both educations, a several courses are taught in English. The master Nautical Science offers a larger number of English courses, merely in the second semester (from February until June). It is possible to compose a second semester’s Learning Agreement of 30 ECTS with courses taught in English. You will find a list of the courses taught in English hereunder. More information about the courses can be found in the curricula of Nautical Sciences and Marine Engineering.

Practical information
Application and selection procedure
- Step 1, E-mail: Your home institution's International Office informs the Antwerp Maritime Academy's Coordinator International Relations (international@hzs.be) about your Erasmus + selection. We assume that your level of English is sufficiently high to follow the courses and to interact with fellow students and the lecturer. The deadline for applications is:
- 31 May for the first semester of the academic year
- 30 November for the second semester of the academic year
- Step 2, Learning Agreement and Transcript of Records: We need from you 4 documents: (1) a copy of your identity card or passport, (2) European health insurance card, (3) the Learning Agreement and (4) your Transcript of Records which allows us to check your preliminary acquired competences. The learning agreement between you and the 2 institutions (home and host institution) must be finalised before you leaves your home country. This document describes the proposed study-abroad programme. The learning agreement can be revised during your stay in Antwerp but must be formally approved by all 3 parties. Send all documents to international@hzs.be.
- Step 3, Preparation of your stay: Once the learning agreement is fully signed you can prepare your stay in Antwerp. You need to search for accommodation.
- Step 4, Welcome meeting: The coordinator of Internationalisation will welcome you at your arrival at the Antwerp Maritime Academy and arrange all the required administration such as your Certificate of Arrival.
- Step 5, Enjoy your stay: Enjoy your study period and your stay in Antwerp. Do not hesitate to contact the coordinator Internationalization if a problem arises! If there are overlaps in your schedule or when you decide to follow other courses, we can change the Learning Agreement.
- Step 6, Results at the Antwerp Maritime Academy: At the end of the academic year (proclamation day), your results at the Antwerp Maritime Academy will be sent to you and to the International Office of your home institution.
