STCW Management Level A-II/2

Introduction

The STCW Management Level programme is delivered in a modular format and covers all competences as set out in the STCW Convention (1978) and Code, as amended.

Management Level

The programme is aligned with Table A-II/2: Specification of minimum standard of competence for masters and chief mates on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more.

Only candidates who have successfully completed the STCW Operational Level may enrol. (For details, see Entry Requirements**)

Upon successful completion of the STCW Management Level programme and after acquiring the required seagoing service*, the trainee will be issued the necessary certificates to serve as Chief Mate or Master on all ship types excluding tankers. The programme is recognised by the Belgian Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport.

Thanks to its modular structure, trainees may spread the programme over several years.

*Required Seagoing Service

  • For certification as Chief Mate: not less than 12 months
  • For certification as Master: not less than 36 months; however, this may be reduced to not less than 24 months provided that not less than 12 months of such service has been completed as Chief Mate.

Entry Requirements

  • STCW Operational Level completed: applicants must hold the STCW Operational Level (i.e., Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on ships of 500 GT or more – STCW II/1 / Table A-II/1).
  • STCW A-VI/1: Basic Safety Training
  • Minimum age: 18 years

If obtained abroad: candidates who completed the Operational Level elsewhere must be able to submit their certificates for evaluation/recognition (and possible exemptions, where applicable).
