Do I need a visa?

If you are an EU citizen or a non-EU national living in the EU, you benefit from the free movement within the Schengen Area, which allows you to travel, work, and live in any EU country without border checks or special formalities. Exchange students from outside the EU may need a visa. To confirm your specific visa requirements, please check the website of the Belgian Embassy in your country. We can support you with a letter of invitation and help you with the necessary paperwork.

What insurance do I need?

If you are from an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, your health insurance should cover your stay in Belgium. European students should provide a copy of their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which can be requested from your insurance provider. Alternatively, you can opt for student insurance, such as the one offered by Expat & Co (see: https://expatinsurance.eu/en/study-insurances/student-insurance). Make sure your accommodation is also insured for fire and liability.

How much should I budget for monthly living expenses in Antwerp as a student?

The cost of living in Antwerp is estimated to range between €950 and €1350 per month, considering current inflation. This amount covers expenses such as study materials, rent, utilities (heating, water, etc.), food, clothing, laundry, healthcare, insurance, and other living costs, including leisure activities and transportation.

How do I find accommodation?

In Belgium, students often rent a single room in a shared house, commonly known as a "kot." As Antwerp is a vibrant student city, it’s important to start looking for accommodation early. A good starting point for your search is Student Kotweb (https://studentkotweb.be/en). Rental prices typically range from €410 to €675, depending on your choice of accommodation—whether it is a room with shared bathroom and kitchen, a studio with private facilities, or an apartment. Keep in mind that these prices usually do not include utilities like water, gas, electricity, and internet. Plan to budget an additional €40 per month for these, depending on your contract terms.
