Living Lab

A school building is usually large in volume. Therefore, it can offer many students an education at the same time. Students are taught there in heated or cooled classrooms. They can also study in the library in peace and quiet. A school building therefore offers high learning comfort. That learning comfort requires a powerful heating system, good Internet, electricity (for lighting and computers) and water (toilets and showers). Students and teachers also all need to get to and from the school. That transportation also requires a lot of energy and contributes to the school's carbon footprint. The question we are asking is how big this carbon footprint is and what we can do to reduce it.

SOCORRO

Corrosion costs a huge amount: a DNV-GL report estimates the all-round corrosion costs for the European region alone at more than 500 billion EUR , overall +/- 3.8% of European GDP. The SOCORRO project therefore aims to provide companies with independent tools to assess the corrosion risks in their facilities, raise their awareness around the issue and help them take preventive measures.

Modeling long-term corrosion through examination of wrecks

Seas and oceans around the world are huge reservoirs of cultural heritage, of such a nature that as a result they should be considered the world's largest museum. Researching the condition of these wrecks is important for three reasons. First, North Sea shipwrecks are of historical importance since they serve as a memorial and resting place for the many crews and soldiers who died defending their country.

An important difference between shipping and other forms of freight transport is that sailing personnel live for longer periods on their ship. As a result, these people might also be exposed to air pollution sources (for example: exhaust gases, cargo vapours, pollution originating from harbours) during their free time. For example, for inland shipping it is common that children sail along during holidays. Unfortunately, we have insufficient knowledge about the indoor air quality in the accommodations of ships.
