Elgas
An important difference between shipping and other forms of cargo transportation is that sailing personnel spend longer periods of time on the ship. Consequently, these people may also be exposed to sources of air pollution (for example: exhaust fumes, cargo fumes, pollution from ports) during their leisure time. For inland navigation, for example, it is common for children to sail along during vacations. Unfortunately, we have insufficient knowledge about the indoor air quality in ship accommodations.

Effects of air quality on health in marine accommodations: monitoring environmental parameters, risk analysis and recommendations
A joint team of the Antwerp Maritime Academy, KdG Hogeschool voor Toegepaste Wetenschappen en Kunsten and VITO wants to evaluate the health risks of sailing personnel in the living spaces on board ships. To realize this ambition, the ELGAS project will realize the following objectives.
- Develop a measurement system that informs sailing personnel of health risks in real time
- Deploy the system on multiple ships
- Gain insight into air quality in ship accommodations
- If necessary, make proposals to improve air quality
- Engage other organizations in achieving our goals
