HB390 Legal Aspects (3ECTS)

Module Outline

This module examines how the Law of the Sea operates within the broader framework of international law and how historical developments culminated in the 1982 Convention. It analyses the legal foundations of hydrography, the role of international organisations, and the integration of hydrographic work within global regulatory structures. Students explore the delimitation and legal regimes of all maritime zones, with particular attention to how these regimes shape hydrographic responsibilities and operational limitations. Finally, the module highlights the professional and legal liability of hydrographers and surveyors, illustrated through real-world cases such as the m/s Rockness incident.
