Final Assessment

Dear seafarer, You want to apply for final assessment in combination with a cadet training record book. Please find hereunder all information and guidance. We ask you to read it carefully to help avoid any unnecessary delays or expenses.

Background

Within the merchant marine, the procedure for reduced sea service (12 months) combined with a Cadet Training Record Book (CTRB) and assessment to obtain your Certificate of Competence (COC) is possible for several programs.

At AMA, we organize final assessment for the programs II/1 (officer in charge of a navigational watch), III/1 (officer in charge of an engine room watch) and III/6 (electrotechnical officer).

The conducting of final assessments to obtain a COC is provided for in the recognition of institutions offering maritime training in article 14§1 of the Belgium Royal Decree of 22 August 2020.

What is an assessment?

A committee assesses (evaluates) whether you are competent to perform the function you apply for and whether you have had sufficient practical exposure to develop the necessary competences. An assessment is not a test of knowledge, nor a repetition of an exam, but an open-ended inquiry aimed at evaluating your ability rather than your theoretical knowledge. The outcome of the assessment is a “pass” or “fail” result.
