Model Outline

The primary objective of this course is to provide advanced insight into marine positioning, depth measurement techniques, and seabed modelling. It aims to deepen students’ understanding of the various sources of error affecting hydrographic data and the levels of accuracy that can be achieved using different instruments and methodologies.

learning Outcomes

1. Explain the working principles of acoustic, optical, and radio positioning

systems, as well as bathymetric sensors, using appropriate scientific terminology.

2. Identify and evaluate the sources of error associated with acoustic, optical, and

radio positioning systems.

3. Construct, apply, and assess error models for planimetric and bathymetric

measurements.

4. Predict the expected accuracy of hydrographic data based on the selected

equipment and methodology.

5. Generate digital seabed models and critically evaluate their quality and

reliability.

6. Produce a well-structured and scientifically justified report on bathymetric data

acquisition or processing.

- Periodic evaluation and continuous assessment using 5 multiple-choice computer tests

- Examination methods in case of periodic evaluation during the first examination period

- Written examination with oral defence. Presentation and written assignment.
