Module Outline

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a practical understanding of geodetic principles and reference systems essential for hydrographic surveying. It introduces the shape and size of the Earth, datums, coordinate systems, and height models used in positioning and mapping.

1. Describe the shape of the Earth using potential surfaces and ellipsoidal models

and explain their relevance in hydrographic applications.

2. Explain the structure and purpose of modern geodetic reference systems,

including their realisation through reference frames.

3. Describe the principles of horizontal and vertical datum transformations and their

practical implications.

4. Explain the geometry of lines on an ellipsoidal surface and perform both forward

and inverse geodetic calculations.

5. Identify common map and chart projection types and explain the distortions

associated with each.

6. Apply appropriate projection formulae based on the characteristics and intended

use of different map projections.

7. Differentiate between gravity-related heights and ellipsoidal heights and explain

their usage in vertical referencing.

Evaluation

Written examination, partly with multiple choice, partly with open questions.

Fieldwork – permanent evaluation the practical exercises.
